Lena Horne

Today on the Michael Eric Dyson show we remember legendary performer and activist Lena Horne, who paved the way for generations of African-American women in entertainment with her singular and uncompromising style. Horne passed away in New York City Sunday night, and as a tribute we’ll speak with James Gavin, author of the critically acclaimed 2009 Horne biography “Stormy Weather.” Additionally we’ll chat with actress, singer, and activist Sheryl Lee Ralph, one of the many benefactors of Horne’s trailblazing career.

Also on today’s show, California, New Jersey, Minnesota, Illinois and several other states have moved to legalize medical marijuana. Now, Washington, D.C. has passed such legislation. We talk with David Cantania, the Washington, D.C. at-large city councilman behind the successful effort to legalize medical marijuana in the District of Columbia.

  1. You know what sometimes I feel aggravated that we still have to address the topic of racism. Sometimes I feel that I wish people would just get over it. Black people need to get over it. White people need to get over it. Then wonderful women like Lena Horne die… and I feel a loss. And people like Sheryl Lee Ralph speak up, and so passionately, about the image of how we are portrayed to the world… and suddenly I’m aggravated for a totally other reason. She’s right. What they are doing to us is immoral and terrible. “We must demand the balance.”
